Subry
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Subry, choose one or two of the day’s curries, with sets that include bean salad and soup. You can also pair biryani with curry.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
At Subry, the first decision is whether to choose one curry of the day or have two served together. The single-curry set lets you pick from that day’s options and comes with salad and soup. With the two-curry set, you can choose any two of the day’s curries, making it a good way to compare their flavours on one plate. Diners have described a range of combinations, including beef tendon with broccoli alongside pork with ume, and beef tendon with aubergine alongside pork with garlic. There is a particular pleasure in choosing what catches your eye that day, rather than settling on the same familiar combination each time.
Some diners who tried two curries said they could appreciate the distinct character of each. One account of a meal featuring curry with beef tendon and taro alongside a spicier keema noted that the keema’s flavour lingered and unfolded on the palate. On another visit, a diner found the tender beef tendon and aubergine a particularly appealing combination. The daily selection varies, but ordering two curries lets you enjoy contrasting ingredients and levels of heat side by side.
The bean salad served with the sets also left an impression on several diners. One enjoyed a tangy salad of beans and onion; it adds a change of pace to the meal, even as a bite while waiting for the curry. For a meal centred on biryani, options include the “Biryani of the Day” and sets pairing biryani with one or two curries. A diner who poured beef tendon and broccoli curry over chicken and edamame biryani described the flavours as mild, and said the achar stood out for its dashi notes rather than its acidity. On another day, a diner reported chicken, burdock and shiitake biryani served with a yoghurt-like accompaniment, with the addition of curry bringing a different flavour to the plate. There is room to decide at the time of ordering whether to enjoy the biryani on its own or add curry for a broader mix of flavours.
If you are planning to come for lunch, check the opening schedule in advance. The listed hours are lunch service on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; lunch and dinner on Tuesday and Friday; and lunch only on Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday. Payment is listed as cash only.
